Lionel Richie
'Lionel Richie' 한국에서 40대 이상의 중년 팝 음악 팬들의 대부분은 그의 이름을
기억하고 있을 것이며, 또한 그가 그룹 Commordores시절에 노래했던
‘Three Times A Lady’나 ‘Easy’, 그리고 Diana Ross와의 듀엣 ‘Endless Love’이나
‘Say You Say Me’ 등 한국 팬들이 유독 사랑했었던 몇 곡의 싱글의 제목을 읊는 것만으로
그를 떠올릴 수 있을 정도로 너무나도 익숙한 이름이죠...
그가 본격적으로 솔로 선언을 한 이후 발표한 3장의 앨범들 – [Lionel Richie (1982)],
[Can’t Slow Down (1983)], [Dancing on the Ceiling (1986)] 은 미국 시장에서만
거둔 판매고가 1800만장을 넘겼다고 합니다.
블랙 발라드(Black Balled)의 대명사로 불리우는 라이오넬 리치(Lionel Richie),
그는 원래 알라바마주의 더스키지 대학 시절에 학교 행사를 담당할 그룹을 만들게
되었는데, 조이스(Joys)라는 그룹 명칭으로 학교 축제와 근교에서 아르바이트를 하면서
음악적인 꿈을 키워 나갔다.
67년에 학교를 졸업하고, 69년에는 애틀란틱 레코드사와 계약을 맺고, 코모도스라는
그룹명으로 본격적인 음악 활동을 개시, 싱글 ＜Keep On Dancing＞을 발표했지만
큰 반응을 얻지 못했다. 이 후, 레코드사를 모타운으로 옮겨, 잭슨 화이브(Jackson 5)의
오프닝 밴드로 활약을 했으나 만족을 느끼지 못한 코모도스는, 74년에 자신들의 힘으로
앨범 「Machine Gun」이 Top-40 최고 22위까지 진출하면서 그들의 이름을 서서히
팝계에 부각시키기 시작했으며, 75년에는 ＜Slippery When Wet＞가 소울 챠트 정상을
차지하는 빅 히트를 기록했다.
76년부터는 라이오넬 리치의 활약이 두드러져서 히트 곡들을 보면,
76년 ＜Sweet Love＞ No.5, ＜Just To Be Close To You＞ NO.7,
77년 ＜Fancey Dancer＞ No.4, ＜Brick Horse＞ No.5,
78년 ＜Too Hot Ta Trot＞ No.24, ＜Three Times A Lady＞ No.1,
＜Flying High＞ No.38,
80년 ＜Wonderland＞ No.25, ＜Old-Fashion Love＞ No.22 등 많은 곡들을 발표했고,
특히 78년에 발표한 ＜Three Times A Lady＞는 당시 디스코(Disco)음악에 염증을
느낀 팝 팬들에게 많은 지지를 얻기도 했다. 81년은 라이오넬 리치가 솔로로 독립할
가능성을 보여준 한 해였는데, 케니 로저스(Kenny Rogers)에게 ＜Lady＞,
＜I Don't Need You＞를 작곡해주어, ＜Lady＞는 6주동안 정상을 고수해 케니 로저스
최대의 히트 곡 중의 한 곡이 되게 했다.
한편, 프랑크 제피렐리가 감독을, 마틴 휴이트와 부룩 실즈가 열연한 영화
『Endless Love』의 주제가를 작곡 프로듀서했고, 60년대 슈프림스(Supremes)를
이끌며 흑인 여성음악을 주도해 온 다이아나 로스(Diana Ross)와 이 동명 타이틀 곡을
불러, Top-40에서 9주간 정상을 차지하는 대 기록을 세우기도 했다.
82년에 앨범 「Lionel Richie」로서 연주자·프로듀서·작곡가 등 다재다능한 솔로 가수로
등장했고, ＜Truly＞란 곡을 빌보드 챠트 정상에 올려 놓는 성공을 거두었으며, 제25회
그래미 시상식에서 최우수 남성 보컬리스트 부문에서 수상하는 영예를 안기도 했다.
후속 곡인 ＜My Love＞, ＜You Are＞도 역시 Top-5에 진출, 그의 음악적인 재능을
유감없이 발휘했다.
그후, 83년말 경 두번째 앨범 「Can't Slow Down」(멈출 수 없어요)를 발표,
첫번째 싱글 커팅된 ＜All Night Long＞은 R & B와 팝을 연결시키려는 그의 재능을
엿볼 수 있는 작품으로, 팝 소울 싱글챠트에서 4주간 1위를 지켰다.
타임지가 그를 가리켜 ‘코모도스의 홈런 왕’이라고 평할 만큼 솔로로 독립한 뒤 단기간에
정상에 올라설 수 있었던 재주꾼으로, 제23회 로스엔젤레스 올림픽 폐막식 때 그가
장식한 무대는, 많은 젊은이들을 흥분의 도가니로 몰아 넣어 그의 인기를 다시 한번
확인했다.
이어진 ＜Running With The Night＞는 발라드 취향과는 달리 댄스풍에 가까운 곡으로
Top-10까지 진출하였고, ＜Hello＞는 마음 속 깊숙히 스며드는 슬픔을 맛볼 수 있는
아름다운 발라드 풍의 노래로, 빌보드 챠트 등장 12주만에 정상을 차지했을 뿐만 아니라,
영국 챠트에서도 1위를 차지하여 그의 인기가 절정에 달했을 즈음, 5월 23일에 미국의
테네시주에 위치한 스톡콜리(Stokely) 체육관에서 그의 뛰어난 음악성과 멋진 무대 매너로
2만여 관중들을 열광시켜, 흑인 음악의 최고봉임을 입증했다.
